Chess players, chess mavens and chess warriors of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to show up and test their mettle against other local talent at a double chess tournament at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library, 4375 Bonita Rd. The event is taking place on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature separate competitions for beginners and experienced players. Participation is free, refreshments will be provided, and trophies and prizes will be awarded.

Eric Jones runs the chess club at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library, one of nine chess clubs in the San Diego County Library system. The others are at Lakeside; Poway; La Mesa; Ramona; San Marcos; and Vista. Players from every community (and any library system) are encouraged to represent their home town and show off their skills.

Chess is an ancient game that continues to be popular, both for sheer enjoyment and for its cognitive enhancement benefits. It fosters intellectual competition, goal-setting and problem-solving. These are life skills that serve people well in any situation. The event last year drew an enthusiastic and diverse crowd.

John Menard, a Bonita Chess Club regular, is excited about the contest. "I look forward to the tournament, and the competition."

Please note that this will not be a rated tournament. Players must sign up by May 12 by contacting Eric Jones at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library at (619) 475-4642 or eric.jones1@sdcounty.ca.gov.
