In 2022, 7,000 community members checked out free hotspots and Chromebooks at the library through a grant-funded program. If you missed the chance to check out a device set, please contact 2-1-1 to learn about other community resources.

  • San Diego County Library acquired 7,000 Chromebook and hotspot sets via the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) grant to circulate to members of the community in need of digital access and bridge the digital divide.

  • If devices become available at a branch, customers will receive a Tech Connect set that includes: ASUS Chromebook C204, an ATT Moxee Hotspot device, plus charging cables.

  • The Chromebook and hotspot set is free to check out with a library card.

  • Yes, because technology access needs may vary. 

  • San Diego County Library card holders are eligible to check out a device set if devices become available. Library cards are available free of charge at any San Diego County Library branch. Minors are eligible to check out a device set after a parent/caregiver signs an Attestation Form on their behalf and when an Internet Consent Form is signed by a parent or legal guardian.

  • If devices become available at a branch, customers can check them out with a valid photo ID or present your SDCL library card and complete an Attestation form.

  • The grant requires that customers declare they do not have access to equipment or services sufficient to access the internet. The customer will do so by completing the Attestation Form and returning to staff.

  • No. Minors must have a parent/caregiver complete the Attestation Form in order to check out a Tech Connect set.   

  • The Chromebook and MiFi devices will be due when data service ends, in June 2024. Existing due dates for Tech Connect kits were extended. Please check your MySDCL account or contact a branch for your new due date.

  • Yes. Customers are asked to return Chromebook and hotspot sets to library staff at the service desk. Returning to exterior bookdrops or through automatic book returns may result in damage to the devices.
