Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a long and proud history in California and San Diego. The first immigrants from the Philippines arrived in 1587. Many more Asian immigrants arrived in the 1800s, and continue to arrive to this day. It is impossible to overstate the important role this diverse group has played in shaping San Diego. Head downtown to learn about the important role Chinese Americans played in shaping California at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum.
Learn about Japanese culture at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. They have an interesting museum, frequent cultural events, and a large and beautiful traditional garden.
Have fun at Mission Bay on September 24 & 25 at the long running Pacific Islander Festival.
For a taste of Asian American Culture, try a trip down Convoy. Visit a great Asian market and then try out one of the many, many amazing restaurants. They serve cuisines from a wide array of Asian cultures. But a heads up – it will be hard to choose just one!
