Did you know that National Children’s Days are observed in countries all around the world? These holidays celebrate the health and happiness of all children.
In Japan, Children’s Day is known as "Kodomo no Hi," and families celebrate by flying carp-shaped streamers (koinobori) and displaying dolls of warriors. In Singapore, they celebrate with school fairs, cultural programs, and parades. Russia celebrates this special day by having it as the start of summer break for schools and universities. If you’re in Australia, they celebrate a full week and highlight a different child's right each year. The whole family celebrates Children’s Day together in South Korea by dressing in traditional clothing and going out together to visit museums, parades, parks, movies, picnics, and more.
Children's Day in Mexico (Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros) is celebrated on April 30 and is a very special day when parties and school events are held. It is observed in many ways. Festivals with games and other fun activities are organized in neighborhoods and government centers. There are also cultural and dance presentations and treats are shared. Some communities plan street fairs, and many groups and organizations conduct toy and clothing drives for shelters and low-income families.
Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros has been observed by San Diego County Library for more than 20 years when libraries host special programs and give each child a book to keep. Visit any San Diego County Library in April for a variety of events like stories, crafts, dance, music, games, and free books for kids and teens. To see a county library events list visit sdcl.org/dia. Everyone is welcome!
This month of celebrations also includes San Diego County Library Story Trails, which are stories in English and Spanish set in parks and trails and hosted in partnership with county and municipal parks; visit the Día de los Niños page to see this year’s selected locations.
