Freed Between the Lines: Banned Books Week

Did you know that Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools? While this week started in 1982, what is considered the first book ban in the United States took place in 1637 with Thomas Morton’s New English Canaan.

Each year libraries across the country celebrate Banned Books Week, usually during the last week of September. Additionally, the American Library Association (ALA) compiles data on book challenges from reports filed by library professionals in the field and from news stories published throughout the United States.
