Graphic novels started out as comic books a hundred years ago. Early comic books were cheap and unsophisticated, and many people condemned them as immoral and a corrupting influence on youth. They were also hugely popular! This American art form spread quickly, and was soon read throughout the world. Comic books were acknowledged as a serious form of literature when Maus, an autobiographical novel about the Holocaust, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.
Today, graphic novel formats still have plenty of superheroes and fun, but you can also find biographies, cookbooks, popular science, religion, romances, and serious literature. SDCL has a huge collection. Take a look!
