“Use the Force, Luke,” is an iconic line, almost as iconic as the sight of the Death Star blowing up.
On May 25, 1977, movie audiences were wowed by a new feature: Star Wars.
The special effects, story, characters, sounds, visuals, and music brought a movie-going audience together and continues to inspire more generations. The initial feature created an empire that would later include many more movies, numerous TV series, a holiday special that was never re-aired or sold, countless toys, hundreds of books, and so much more.
The sequel to Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, hit theaters three years later in 1980, with the third movie, Return of the Jedi, following in 1983. As technology matured, Lucas was able to create his prequel trilogy in 1999, 2002, & 2005, bringing fresh stories to a new generation.
Fans were sad to hear Lucas had no intention of making more long motion pictures, so when it was announced in October 2012 that Disney had bought Lucasfilm, including all the rights to Star Wars, for $4.05 billion, fans were excited to see what would happen to the future of their favorite series.
Now, almost 10 years later, fans have gotten new movies, TV shows, books, video games, and so much more. The world Lucas created has turned into a colossal fanbase with additional stories, planets, aliens, characters that continues to awe and inspire audiences worldwide.
The past almost 45 years of Star Wars has led to electronic lightsaber proposals, Storm Troopers chasing down Blake Shelton, red carpet events, tons of debates, fan videos of lightsaber battles in weddings, gold bikinis in non-Star Wars TV shows and movies!
