If you are a horror movie fan, you have probably already watched some recent films that have quickly achieved cult-like status, such as The Witch, Midsommar and Hereditary. But what you might not know is that they all share the same production company: A24.
A24, which had previously mainly focused on art films, tried its hand at horror in the early 2010s and completely revolutionized the genre.
Up until then, in fact, horror films portrayed slasher killers, demons, possessions, and unholy beings. However, unlike old horror films, which relied heavily on jump scares and blood and guts, A24 productions are all about subtle, scary scenarios. A24 changed the horror movie game so much that it is now a genre in its own.
Sure, Freddy Krueger or Jason might give you reason to run for your life, but A24 films delve into something scarier: the irrational and often relatable fear of the unknown, which lies deep into our subconscious, our traditions, our history, and our families.
“Reflecting on everything from family, trauma, and loss to the terrifying beings that can lurk in the recesses of our subconscious, the horror films with the A24 stamp are largely memorable.” (Collider.com)
